Green pool? Let's bring it back.

Algae treatment, filtration correction and chemical rebalancing — and we fix whatever let it turn green in the first place, so it stays clear.

Why it happens

Why pools turn green.

Green and cloudy water usually means algae. The common causes are low chlorine, high pH, and not enough circulation or filtration.

Most of the time it's a mix. The pump timer's been cut back, the filter's overdue, and the chlorine's dropped off during a run of hot days.

Perth summers don't help. HealthyWA advises at least 2 mg/L free chlorine below 26°C — and at least 3 mg/L above it. So the pool needs more chlorine right when it's getting the most use. A pool that looks fine on Friday can be green by Monday.

Not every green tinge is algae, though. Clear green water can have other causes, so we test before we treat — no throwing chemicals at it and hoping.

What we usually find

  • Chlorine too low for the weather
  • pH drifted high, so chlorine isn't working properly
  • Pump not running long enough
  • Filter overdue for a clean
  • Leaves and debris sitting in the pool
  • A salt chlorinator not pulling its weight
How we fix it

Three steps, in this order.

Inspect, diagnose, resolve — the same way every job starts. We look at the water, the equipment and the debris load, and test the chemistry.

Then we work out what's actually going on. Chemical, mechanical, filtration, or just maintenance that's overdue.

Then we fix it. Depending on how far the pool's gone, that can mean repeated filtering, brushing, vacuuming, filter cleaning and retesting until the water's clear and properly balanced.

If the real problem is a pump, filter or chlorinator, we'll tell you straight — and tell you the right fix. Decisions, not guesswork.

What a recovery covers

  • Water tested before anything goes in
  • Algae treatment and chemical rebalancing
  • Walls, steps and waterline brushed
  • Sediment and debris removed, vacuuming as required
  • Filter cleaned or backwashed as needed
  • Pump, filter and chlorinator checked
  • A plain-English rundown of what caused it
Keeping it clear

Clear water. Now let's keep it that way.

The most common reason a pool goes green again? Nothing changed.

HealthyWA recommends checking chemical levels at least once a day — more often in hot weather. It also says a home filtration system should turn over all the pool water within 6 to 8 hours.

Rather not keep on top of that yourself? We take it off your hands with regular pool maintenance — one-off, bi-monthly or monthly. Every visit includes water testing, chemical balancing and equipment checks, with a chemistry report emailed afterwards.

How long does green pool recovery take?

There's no reliable fixed timeframe. It depends on the cause, how much algae there is, the water balance, how well the filter's working and how much debris is in the pool. It can take repeated filtering, brushing, vacuuming and retesting before the water's clear and balanced.

Can't I just add more chlorine?

Sometimes that's not enough. If the pH is high, chlorine doesn't work as well — and if circulation or filtration is the problem, the algae comes straight back. That's why we test and check the equipment first.

Is a green pool safe to swim in?

We'd stay out. Green, cloudy water usually means algae, so wait until it's clear and the chlorine and pH are back where HealthyWA recommends.

Why did my pool go green after a hot week?

Heat, UV and more swimmers burn through chlorine faster. HealthyWA advises more free chlorine once the water's above 26°C, so a routine that worked in winter can fall behind fast.
